Tacoma's gas fireplaces come in two families. In newer homes and condos they are sealed direct-vent boxes venting through a wall. In the older neighborhoods, many are gas logs or gas inserts set into what was once a coal or wood firebox, venting up an old masonry chimney, and that chimney is part of what we check.
In Tacoma, the median house was built in 1967 and about 64.3 percent predate 1980, according to the census. The historic cores are much older: the North Slope district lists 1,285 resources over 228 acres, and nearly 80 percent of its buildings went up before 1930.
Owners of those older houses have often converted one or more original fireplaces to gas logs or inserts, while another fireplace in the same house still burns wood. We treat each opening as its own appliance, since a gas unit and a wood hearth sharing one stack each need their own flue in good order.
