DuPont, Pierce County
Chimney repair in DuPont begins at $375, and the final number depends entirely on what failed. A few cracked bricks and a patch of loose mortar is a small job; a leaning stack or a chase whose cover has rusted through and let water rot the framing is a much larger one. We photograph the damage, explain the cause, and give you a written quote with every repair itemized separately, so you choose what gets done first.

DuPont has two very different kinds of chimney to repair. The Historic Village grew around the DuPont Company's explosives works, which operated from 1909 to 1975, and its houses carry brick and mortar that have been through a lot of winters. The Northwest Landing neighborhoods, built after 1989, mostly have wood-framed chases clad in siding and topped with a metal cover. A repair on the first means masonry work; on the second it usually means carpentry, sheet metal and sealing.
DuPont began as a company town. The DuPont Company sold the houses to the workers renting them in 1951, the year the town incorporated, and the old village was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a district in 1987. Those homes are the oldest in town by far.
Census estimates put DuPont's median home at 2002, with about 5.6 percent of units predating 1960. So while the village's masonry chimneys need traditional brick and mortar repair, most calls from the rest of town concern the chase cover, the framing under it, and the vent parts of factory-built fireplaces.
Every chimney repair we do in DuPont includes:
Smoke coming back into the room, or a smell that won't go? Book the inspection first.
Book nowOn older brick, the trouble starts at the top: a crown cracks, water gets into the joints, and the mortar begins to wash out a few courses down. On newer chases, it is the cover. A flat or poorly sloped chase top holds water, the paint fails, rust spreads, and water drips inside the chase where nobody sees it until the siding stains or the firebox shows streaks. Both are cheaper to fix early than after a season of hidden leaking.
We look at the chimney from the roof, the attic and the room, and photograph each problem we find.
Before any quote, we show you where the water or movement is coming from, so the repair addresses the source and not just the symptom.
Work runs top-down: crown or cover first, then brick and joints or framing and siding, so the new work is protected as it goes.
The site is cleaned, and you receive photos of the finished repair next to the ones taken before.

In WeatherSpark's records, December is DuPont's coldest month, with average lows near 35°F, and it falls in the middle of a wet season that stretches from early October to the start of May. Mortar and brick that soak up water at those temperatures are slow to dry.
The top of the chimney takes the most weather. Under the state residential code, a brick chimney must clear its roof opening by 3 feet or more and top every part of the house within a 10-foot radius by 2 feet, so the crown and upper courses are left fully exposed. That is where we look first for the damage that leads everything else.
DuPont is a former company town built around an explosives plant, joined since 1989 by the planned Northwest Landing, with mostly recent homes — a median build year of 2002 — around a historic company village. We work every part of it — the Historic Village, Northwest Landing included.

It starts at $375. Replacing a handful of bricks or repointing a small area sits near that starting point; a crown rebuild, a new chase cover with framing repair or a partial rebuild costs more, and the quote spells it out.
Yes. Framed chases are the most common type in DuPont's newer neighborhoods, and most of their problems start at the metal cover on top.
Sometimes. If it is in the crown or near the top, water will keep getting in all winter, so it is better handled before the rains settle in. We tell you honestly which cracks are cosmetic.
