A good share of newer Fife houses have the washer and dryer one floor up, or tucked against an interior wall, so exhaust travels farther and around more elbows. Lint collects at each one. Under the state residential code, smooth 4-inch metal exhaust pipe may run 35 feet at most, and each right-angle elbow costs 5 of those feet, which leaves a laundry far from any outside wall very little slack before drying times stretch out.

Book nowDamp weather makes it worse. With rain most weeks for about half the year, line-drying outdoors is rarely an option, and wet loads push more moisture and lint through the duct. At the outside end, a hood flap that sticks or a termination clogged with lint and debris means warm, humid air backs up into the run, and lint turns into a damp mat that is harder to clear.
Fife's rainier months stretch from around October 9 to May 2 in WeatherSpark's climate data. For a dryer vent, that means a hood outside that is wet most of the time, and lint that clings to it rather than blowing away.
State code shapes that outside end: the duct has to finish outdoors with a backdraft damper, no screen over the opening, and a spot at least 3 feet from doors, windows and other openings. A screen is left off on purpose, because lint would clog it; we clear the hood and check the damper closes against the weather.
With the dryer on, we read the airflow at the exterior hood to get a baseline.
Next the machine slides out so we can look at the flexible connector and spot any flattened or separated duct.
Rotary brushes and air go through the whole duct, from the wall to the outside hood, collecting the lint as it comes out.
